Further Readings: The Lost World by Michael Crichton

After the popularity of the first novel and movie, fans and director Steven Speilberg encouraged Crichton to write a sequel novel. The second Jurassic Park novel, The Lost World, takes place six years later. Malcolm returns as the protagonist of the second novel [It is revealed that Ian Malcolm does not actually die at the end of the first novel—he was so weak that he appeared dead]. Malcolm is sent on a mission to a second smaller island, Site B, where the dinosaurs were cloned and raised before being transported to the larger island of Jurassic Park. Richard Levine (a rich researcher) mysteriously disappears, and Malcolm fears he is on his way to Site B. Levine's employees Doc Thorne and Eddie Carr predict the location of Site B, with the assistance of Malcolm and two schoolchildren, computer genius R.B. "Arby" Benton and his friend Kelly Curtis. They organize a rescue operation and travel to the island to find Levine.

At the same time, Lewis Dodgson, geneticist at Biosyn heads to Isla Sorna, hoping to steal dinosaur eggs for his company. Sarah Harding, a wildlife observer and Malcolm's ex-girlfriend, accompanies Dodgson to the island. Dodgson throws Sarah overboard from their ship, thinking she will drown, and continues with his plan. Dodgson locates a nest of T-rex's, walks up to the eggs, carrying a box that emits painful ultrasonic frequencies that fend off the grown Tyrannosaurs. Dodgson tells his employees to grab the eggs while he holds the adult dinosaurs at bay with the box, but his employees are too frightened of the adult dinosaurs.  Dodgson is forced to steal the eggs himself. While walking towards the eggs, he steps on a hatchling Tyrannosaur, breaking its leg. The power cord for the box is pulled out of its battery pack, leaving the men defenseless. It takes the adults a while to notice that the noise had stopped, but they soon attack. Dodgson makes a run for the car, but one Tyrannosaur pushes it off the hill before he can drive away.

Coming across the injured baby Tyrannosaur, Eddie brings it back to the base camp, where Malcolm and Sarah fix its broken leg. Its parents, who track their offspring note the absence of the infant and follow its scent to the trailers. The T-Rex then pushes one of the trailers off the cliff with Malcolm and Sarah inside. They are rescued, but Malcolm's leg is injured, and he ends up spending most of the remainder of the story immobile (as he did in the previous novel). Meanwhile Eddie is attacked and killed by Velociraptors and Arby is kidnapped. Thorne and Levine rescue Arby, and the survivors take shelter in an abandoned gas station set up by InGen for the island's workers when the island was still in use.

Once daylight comes, Sarah attempts to get the car back. After hiding from a group of dinosaurs, she encounters Dodgson, who is searching for his car. Sarah pushes Dodgson out from under the vehicle, as revenge for his earlier attempt to murder her. He is then taken by one of Tyrannosaurs to their nesting site, where his leg is broken and he is left for the babies to eat. After making a quick getaway from a group of Velociraptors, the survivors are able to reach an abandoned boat and escape the island. While on the boat, Malcolm and Harding tell Levine that some of the carnivores are infected with a virus, and any animal bitten by them will be infected also. This means that all the dinosaurs on the island are fated to die due to spread of the virus. With that said, Thorne finally declares that is time for all of them to go home.
