was directed by Volker Schlondorff and released in March of 1990 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayor Studios. While the adherence to the plot is generally correct and the film includes a cast of revered actors, I believe that there is no way to transpose the utter complexity of the novel onto film. In order to keep the film to a reasonable length, there are many "minor" omissions from the plot which, while maintaining a reasonable chain of events in the plot, takes away from the film's impact in general.
