Science Fiction to the Masses

Dune was an incredible departure from the ordinary in science fiction - a category of writing once relegated to pulp magazines and boytime bedsides. Dune was the first hardcover science fiction novel bestseller, and is frequently heralded as the bestselling science fiction novel of all time.

Written by Frank Herbert and published in 1965, the story has all the elements of a bestseller: politics, prophecy, war and romance. Set in the far future on multiple planets, the main setting is Arrakis, a desert wasteland that holds the most valuable substance in the universe: Melange.

The book has spawned numerous sequels, a poorly received movie directed by David Lynch, video games, a SciFi channel miniseries and more. The novel itself continues to sell well to this day, capturing the minds of fans and science fiction newcomers alike.

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."
