Throughout the years, the genre of Science Fiction has dazzled and entertained it's followers through a myriad of ideals and concepts. One such concept that has entertained many and affected the genre of Science Fiction forever, is the utilization of Alien Languages. The phenomenon of Alien Languages was first introduced in the genre of Science Fiction in the year 1880 when Percy Greg wrote the novel, Across the Zodiac. Since this genre-changing event, the utilization of Alien Languages have been in abundant. The use of Alien Languages in Science Fiction has created a sense of curosity in the are of academia. The study of Alien Languages has obtained the names of xenolinguistics, astrolinguistics, or exolinguistics. The first time that one of these specific terms, xenolinguistics, was utilized in Science Fiction was in the 1986 novel, "TRIAD" by Sheila Finch. The creation of Alien Languages has also lead to many research groups such as SETI, or Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence.

(Klingon Alphabet)

The above picture is that of the Klingon alphabet, which has been able to be made due to studies such as xenolinguistics, astrolinguistics, and exolinguistics, which encompass the study, formation, and enactment of Alien Languages for the purpose of communication with outer space beings. One such language that was created, is that of Lincos. Lincos was created by Dr. Hans Freudenthal in 1960. This language was generated in order to contact Aliens through the utilization of of interstellar radio transmissions. The Lincos-based dictionary was applied in the movie Contact. Throughout the years, the concept of Lincos has been developed and enhanced. Dr. Alexander Ollongren produced a new version of Lincos in which he enhanced it to incorporate multi-levels. This allows the description of the logical content of texts, as well as the framework.

(Radio Telescope)

The SETI program, Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence, has also derived from the concept of Alien Languages in Science Fiction. This organization utlizes various scientific techniques to search for extraterrestrial life. Such experiments include radio experiments, optical experiments, and probe SETI and SETA experiments. For radio experiments, researches use radio telescopes to to scan the universe hoping to pick up signals from extraterrestrial life. The most promising signal came on August 15, 1977 when the OSU SETI program came upon powerful signal that lasted for 72 senconds; this has been dubbed the Wow! signal. Researches also conduct optical experiments. The reason for this is because some believe that aliens could be trying to reach us through interstellar lasers. This idea, however, has not been able to pick up steam and is frowned upon by many scientists. Some scientist conduct probe experiments, in which they use messenber probes to search for extraterrestrial life. This idea was made plausible by Project Daedalus in 1978.
