Season one
Volume 1: Genesis

Isaac's paintings of New York exploding forms the basis of the primary story arc of the first season. The volume begins as a seemingly ordinary group of people gradually becomes aware that they have special abilities. Events illustrate their reactions to these powers, and how their powers affect their personal lives. At the same time, several ordinary individuals are investigating the origins and extent of these abilities. Mohinder Suresh, continues his late father's research into the biological source of the change, while Noah Bennet represents a secret organization known only as "The Company". Each of the characters is drawninto the Company's conspiracy to control posthumans and into a race to stop an explosion from destroying New York City. Though Nathan at first tries to cause the explosion of New York, he later saves the city by flying Peter away just before he explodes. The volume ends with Hiro being sent to the 1600s and the whereabouts of Peter and Nathan are unknown.

Season two
Volume 2: Generations
Volume two begins four months after the events of Kirby Plaza. Peter is found in Ireland with no memory of his life, not even his name. Hiro is stuck in 17th century Japan, where he meets his bedtime story hero, Takezo Kensei. Kensei proves to be less heroic than Hiro imagined and he tries to train him in heroism but later discovers that he is a villain with healing abilities. Nathan is found to be unharmed by Peter's explosion, but is haunted by deformed images of himself, and no longer Senator of New York. Matt Parkman discovers that his powers consist of mind control, not just telepathy. Peter's memory is later restored using his healing ability to heal the brain damage that resulted in memory loss.. The main plot of Generations deals with the Company and its research on the Shanti virus. The Company's founders identities are revealed, as well as to why they researched this deadly virus and the effects of various strains of the virus. Sylar is infected by such a strain and he loses abilities. Adam Monroe is the main villain of season two and is discovered to be one of the founders, and is trying to release the virus to "cleanse the world". Hiro discovers Adam Monroe is really Takezo Kensei, but his healing abilities halted his aging, leaving him to feel the only way to better the world is to start over with global genocide. Monroe tricks Peter into using his many powers to obtain the virus, but the "heroes" come together in an attempt to stop the release of a deadly strain of the virus and avert a global pandemic.

Season three
Volume 3: Villains
The lead-in to Villains showed Sylar regaining his lost powers, shown as the final scene of the Generations finale. Volume three began with the assassination attempt on Nathan Petrelli, and the consequences it has. In addition, several villains escape from Level 5, and the Company attempts to recapture them. It is discovered that a future Peter attempted to murder his brother because in the future, the world goes to chaos with everyone having abilities. Arthur Petrelli, Nathan and Peter's supposedly dead father, heals from systemic nerve damage with the help of Adam Monroe's healing abilities and eventually recruits a few of the villains while later luring in Mohinder Suresh, Nathan Petrelli, Tracy Strauss, Elle Bishop, and Sylar. They wish to create the formula future Peter tried to stop because it gives people abilities. After many failures they realize they need to find the "catalyst", which is contained within a person. Claire is the catalyst and the formula is created when Arthur steals it from her. The finale results in both Pinehearst and Primatech being destroyed and Nathan feeling remorse of what he tried to do.

Volume 4: Fugitives
The second part of the series titled Fugitives involves what happens after Nathan fails to produce the formula. After the destruction of Primatech and Pinehearst, the Heroes attempt to lead normal lives until Nathan initiates his plan to round up all people with abilities. Meanwhile, Sylar begins the search for his real parents. Throughout the way, Rebel, later revealed to be Micah Sanders, guides the Heroes. In the finale, Sylar kills Nathan in an intense duel. Peter, however, is able to tranquilize Sylar. With Sylar's unconscious body and a dead Nathan, Matt is instructed by Angela Petrelli to alter Sylar's mind to believe he is Nathan, with Sylar's acquired ability enabling him to fully embody Nathan's personality and gain his memories and form.

Season four
Volume 5: Redemption
The season opens with a new group of posthumans. They are part of a carnival lead by Samuel Sullivan, who possesses the ability to control the earth. He is trying to recruit as many posthumans to his carnival in order to increase his power so he can take over the world in the name posthumans. Peter is now a paramedic again and "Nathan" is back in the senate seat. However, Sylar is beginning to show himself in Nathan's actions and eventually comes out. Sylar then goes to the Sullivan Bro's Carnival with no memory of his past life or Nathan’s. Matt Parkman is struggling with Sylar being inside his head after forcing it out of Sylar's body. Sylar eventually takes over Parkman and finds his body, where Nathan seized control again. Sylar is now back in his own body with Nathan and they are fighting for control. Hiro learns that using his power has developed a tumor in his brain so he has constructed a bucket list to "right" his past wrong-doings.One of which is to save Charlie, a waitress in Texas that Sylar killed for her ability. He eventually saves her but she is kidnapped by Samuel so Hiro will work for him. Claire is in college, struggling to fit in. She is trying to live a normal life but is finding it difficult when another posthuman murders her roommate. Claire later finds a compass in her father's drawer and uses it to find the Sullivan Carnival. Samuel recruits Claire and she decides to give it a chance. Peter absorbs the Haitian ability of preventing other abilities to stop Sylar and save Nathan.
