Analysis

Dr. Elwin Ransom – The unlikely hero from the first installment of the trilogy, Ransom is asked, this time voluntarily, to fill this role again. His knowledge of Hlab-Eribol-ef-Cordi, the common language of the universe, gives him a desirably heroic trait that was lacking in the beginning of the first novel. In addition, his familiarity with interplanetary travel and religion make Ransom a perfect candidate for the defense of Perelandrian innocence.

The Green Lady – The Perelandrian Eve, the Queen Mother is completely innocent. She has no real way of determining right and wrong, leaving her both open to and naturally resilient against the temptations of the possessed Weston. Her connection to Maleldil the Young is extremely intimate and strong.

Dr. Weston / The Un-Man – The bigoted physics professor from the first novel is back with a new message: the advancement of any form of intelligent life, or “spirit.” He is quickly taken over by forces of the Earth’s dark Oyarsa, becoming a vehicle for evil in Perelandra. For brief periods, the real Weston is allowed to come back out, totally repentant of his brash idealistic view, but unable to regain control of his forfeited body.

Tor-Oryars-Perelandri – The Green Lady’s male counterpart, he is absent until the end of the book. Because of Ransom’s destruction of the body of the tempter, Tor is given the title of Oyarsa by the great Eldil of Perelandra. He is described by Ransom to be an almost exact physical double of Christ.

Lewis – Cleverly a character in his own book, it is Lewis whom Ransom entrusts with the care of his affairs on Earth during his journey. It is also Lewis who is responsible for freeing Ransom from his vessel upon his return.
