Joshua Calvert: Joshua’s father was an independent trader whose space vessel, the Lady Macbeth, was severely damaged and left, in its crippled state, to Joshua upon his death. Joshua makes a fortune by finding artifacts of the extinct Laymil scattered throughout an asteroid field that was created by the explosion of their planet. He uses the money to repair the Lady Macbeth and put himself into business as an independent trader. Unknowingly, Calvert transports the Possessed in control of Quinn Dexter’s body off Lalonde, and the infection begins to spread throughout the Confederation. He has a strong intuitive ability that runs in his bloodline, and he plays a critical role in the events, and particularly the conclusion, of The Night’s Dawn. Syrinx: Syrinx is the captain of the Edinist voidhawk Oenon and is part of the Confederation Navy at the beginning of the series. After their tour of duty with the Navy ends, she and Oenon go into the independent trading business. She and her ship accompany Calvert and the Lady Macbeth on their search for the Sleeping God. Quinn Dexter: Dexter was a member of an Earth-based satanic cult called God’s Brother, until he became a threat to the group’s leader, who arranged for him to be arrested and sentenced to a twenty year labor period on the developing colony world Lalonde. He spreads the cult among his fellow convict workers, called Ivets, and mutilates several colonists in satanic rituals. It is during one of these rituals that the gateway to the Beyond is opened and he is possessed. His possessor finds transportation off Lalonde with Joshua Calvert and spreads the infection to another planet. Dexter regains control of his body and returns to Earth where he seeks revenge on those who had him arrested and, misunderstanding the nature of the Beyond, attempts to raise demons to Earth. He is used by the Sleeping God to lead the lost souls of the Beyond into the ultimate afterlife as part of the process of righting the universe. Al Capone: You thought this ‘20s gangster was done for after he died of syphilis related complications, but he’s back 600 years later in Possessed form and is still causing mischief. Capone takes over the industrial planet New California and, with the aid of illegal antimatter, raises a Navy to rival the Confederation’s and seeds other planets with Possessed. He is, however, forced to surrender his forces to the Confederation and leave the body he possesses when his supply of antimatter is cut off. Ione Saldana: Ione is the hereditary ruler of Tranquility and one of Calvert’s numerous lovers. She continues the Ruin Ring project that her family began generations earlier and discovers that the Laymil destroyed their planet when faced with their own Possessed. |
