Joanna Eberhart was the immensely successful president of a television network until a new string of gender-related shows resulted in her expulsion from the network. After a mental breakdown, her husband, Walter, moves their family to the high-tech gated community of Stepford, Connecticut. As the stereotypically cynical New Yorker, Joanna immediately distrusts the smiling, cheerful housewives in their sundresses and wide-brimmed hats who spend all day cooking and cleaning. Her two friends, Bobbie Markowitz, a Jewish writer, and Roger Bannister, the more feminine half of a gay couple, agree that something is wrong in Stepford. But when Roger visits the elite Men's Association and comes back a different person, Joanna and Bobbie's suspicions turn more serious.
