Aerial view of Nome   Location of Nome

The setting of "The Fourth Kind" is present day Nome, Alaska, a small town of about 3500 people. Between 1960 and 2004, an alarmingly high number of people in Nome have disappeared without a trace. 20 people have mysteriously vanished without a hint of their whereabouts. Originally thought to be the work of a serial killer in the area, the FBI has since concluded that "excessive alcohol consumption and harsh climate" is likely the culprit of the disappearances. In just over 40 years, the FBI has come to the small town more than two thousand times. Juneau, with a population ten times the size of Nome, has been visited by the FBI only 363 times; second most in the state of Alaska. This has caused people to believe that there is a governmental cover-up, similar to thoughts about the infamous Area 51.
